Autumn in the air

Who doesn’t love autumn in their garden?

True, it means we need to say goodbye to hot summer days, but we hardly have a choice, so why not enjoy it!

And there is a lot to like about this particular season…

Fiery yellows, oranges and red, for one.

There is plenty of warm brown too, and every shade in between!

Top tips for a beautiful garden in autumn

First of all, tidy up, yes, but resist the urge to cut everything back!

You’ll be glad that you didn’t when winter comes with the frost and the beautiful soft light.

Secondly, when choosing your summer flowering perennials, check whether they also look good out of season.

Many shrubs, perennials and grasses produce fruit or seed heads which add a pop of colour and interesting texture to the borders in autumn.

Finally, go and explore: pay attention to how plants you see in the wild, parks or gardens behave in the later months of the year.

This will give you the insight needed to decide which plants might work well in your own garden.

Below you’ll find the photos of some of my firm autumn favourites…
